Meningitis is the inflammation of meninges ( i.e., the three membranes covering the brain and the spinal cord) usually due to some bacterial or virus infection at the surrounding of brain and spinal cord.
Encephalitis refers to inflammation of the brain itself, generally caused by the virus.
Meningitis and Encephalitis includes bacteria, virus, fungus infection and parasites.
When surrounding fluid of meninges becomes infected, Meningitis occurs.
In acute cases it is advisable to establish the identity of the causative organism by the examination of the cerebro spinal fluid. Acupuncture and Acupressure therapy, however may be used to relieve pain and to provide other symptomatic relief, improve immune mechanism.
Acupuncture is also used particularly useful in cases of viral infections where there is hyper sensitivity.
In the post – infective period it is useful in dealing with many neurological sequelae. The points to be used depend on the condition and stage of the disease.
The inflammation from meningitis mainly triggers symptoms like headache, stiffness in neck, fever with nausea and vomiting
Usually, antibiotics are the first line of choice in the treatment of meningitis. Acupuncture and Acupressure may be used for the treatment of meningitis where antibiotics cannot be used, on account of side effects.
It can become serious and life-threatening blood poisoning (septicaemia) and can affect serious cause to brain and nerves.
According to Acupuncture inflammation of the covering membrane of the brain & spinal cord (meningitis) is due to
- Liver wind generating very high heat.
- Also, it is due to chronic spleen wind- In children
With meningitis extreme heat occurs in blood while circulates in entire body.
Causes of Meningitis
There are several forms which causes meningitis but bacteria and virus are the main cause. It causes infection in entire body. It spread through blood stream to the entire nervous system.
Signs and symptoms meningitis stimulates are –
- High Fever
- Stiff neck
- Rapid Breathing
- Skin Rashes
- Sensitivity from Light
- Poor Thirst
- Pale skin
- Muscular and Joints Pain
- Poor Appetite
Types of Meningitis
There are 5 types of Meningitis
Viral Meningitis– It is a most common type of meningitis. It is of contagious type, which can be caused by unhygienic cleanliness practices of infected person like- not cleaning proper hands after changing diapers or fecal contamination or they swim in public swimming pool. Also ensure to get vaccinated for mumps, measles, chickenpox, rubella, Influenza
Bacterial Meningitis– This is the serious type of meningitis. It is life threatening type of disease which could cause permanent disabilities of brain, neurological disorder, hearing loss.
Usually, it occurs when this infection enters in blood stream and makes it way to the brain and spinal cord. They usually spread from person to person through sneezing, coughing, mouth contraction, kissing.
The bacteria that cause bacterial meningitis are streptococcus pneumoniae, meningococcus, haemophilus, listeria
Fungal Meningitis– Fungal meningitis is rare type of meningitis, People with low immunity have more probability to have this meningitis. People with Cancer, HIV are at more risk.
The most common funguses related to fungal meningitis are-
Parasitic Meningitis– This type of meningitis is rarely found. It is caused by parasites found in poultry, raw fish, snails, slugs. It could be a chance to enter the one who consume infected one. The risk increases with raw and uncooked food. Parasitic meningitis can also be caused by tapeworm infection in the brain.
Non Infectious Meningitis – Non Infectious meningitis can’t be transferred from one person to other. It mainly occurs from cancer, brain surgery, head injury, lupus. This could also be caused by chemical reactions and drug allergies.
How Meningitis Transmitted
These bacteria can be spread to other people by sharing respiratory and throat secretion mainly by sharing the utensils, toothbrushes, cold-cough, sneezing, Kissing. Some bacterial meningitis is contagious.
It also entered from nasal mucous in such contact. Direct contact to infected person increases the risk of being infected. Mainly it can spread by the person who carry these virus and bacteria in their nose or throat. It spreads through air and entered through nasal passage.
Effects of Meningitis to body
Some of the common complications from meningitis which people suffer from are-
- Hard or loss of Hearing
- Renal Problems
- Imbalanced Body
- Disturbed vision
- Cranial book dysfunction
- Chronic Neurological problem
- Cerebral Edema
- Adrenal Gland failure
Prevention of Meningitis
Skipping Vaccination and compromised immune system are the major risk and invitation to such infections.
Acupuncture is one of the widely recognized worldwide evidence-based therapy. Acupuncture controls the infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord and Controls the inflammation which occurred.
Also, it will work on blood stream level to control its spread throughout. And improve the immune system to fight back with infection.
